SAVE HELIUM AND GET BALLOONS THAT FLOAT FOR SEVERAL
DAYS USING A HELIUM/AIR MIXTURE AND ULTRA HI-FLOAT

The HI-FLOAT Company has developed a method for inflating latex balloons using ULTRA HI-FLOAT that uses 40% less helium. This technique uses a helium/air mixture and provides balloons that float for several days longer than balloons filled with helium alone. The savings on helium virtually pay for the ULTRA HI-FLOAT. (Note: Use only ULTRA HI-FLOAT when inflating with helium/air mixtures. SUPER HI-FLOAT is not recommended for this application.)

Method 1, below, uses a 60/40 inflator to inflate the balloon with a 60% helium, 40% air mixture. If you do not have a 60/40 inflator, click here for alternative Method 2.

METHOD 1: INFLATING ULTRA HI-FLOAT TREATED BALLOONS WITH A 60/40 INFLATOR

  1. Add ULTRA HI-FLOAT to you latex balloon using the restriction clip indicated in the table below.

60/40 inflator
1 1/2 cup (add through funnel)
  1. Rub the balloon to spread the ULTRA HI-FLOAT.
  2. Inflate the balloon with a 60/40 inflator on your helium tank.

The key to success is adding enough helium for the balloons to float initially. Make sure to fully inflate the balloon. If the balloon floats initially, it should float for several days.

This method is ideal when you only need the balloons to float for a few days. For maximum floating times, use 100% helium and use HI-FLOAT basic instructions as a guide for choosing the appropriate pump restriction clip.

METHOD 2: INFLATING ULTRA HI-FLOAT TREATED BALLOONS WITH
HELIUM/AIR MIXTURES WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE A 60/40 INFLATOR

  1. Add ULTRA HI-FLOAT to your latex balloon using the restriction clip indicated in the table below.
Clip Sizes
Balloon Size ULTRA HI-FLOAT
9 inches not recommended
11 inches black*
14 inches 2 strokes white
16 inches yellow
24 inches 2 strokes blue
30 inches 3 strokes yellow
36 inches 4 strokes yellow
40 inches 5 strokes yellow
48 inches 3/4 cup (add through funnel)
60 inches 1 1/2 cup (add through funnel)

  1. Rub the balloon to spread the ULTRA HI-FLOAT.
  2. Inflate the balloon with nitrogen or air to the diameter indicated in the table below. A balloon sizing device makes this step much easier.
Balloon Size Diameter Inflated with
Nitrogen or Air
9 inches not recommended
11 inches 7 inches
14 inches 10 inches
16 inches 11 inches
24 inches 17 inches
30 inches 22 inches
36 inches 26 inches
40 inches 29 inches
48 inches 35 inches
60 inches 44 inches

  1. Inflate the balloon the rest of the way with helium.

The key to success is adding enough helium for the balloons to float initially. Depending on you climate/altitude, you may need to change the gas mixture slightly to get the balloon to float well initially. If the balloon floats initially, it will float for several days.

This method is ideal when you only need the balloons to float for a few days. For maximum floating times, use 100% helium and use HI-FLOAT basic instructions as a guide for choosing the appropriate pump restriction clip.

HELIUM SHORTAGE LIKELY TO CONTINUE

Rising prices and tight helium supplies continue to affect everyone in the balloon and party industry. Conserving helium is becoming more imporant as supplies are not forecast to improve until well into 2008.

In addition to conserving a valuable resource, the money saved on helium with this technique virtually covers the cost of the ULTRA HI-FLOAT.
